What is Homeopathy

The highest objective in homeopathy is to restore health rapidly, gently and permanently. Homeopathy is holistic medicine. In treating an illness it takes into account the unique psychological, emotional and physical characteristics of the individual. The medicines are prepared from natural substances such as plants, minerals, and animals. They are diluted to a refined state of dynamic energy and therefore have a truly holistic effect upon the body by influencing and stimulating the body's ability to heal itself. The dilution of the natural medicinal substance allows the body to use it at a cellular level while doing so in a safe, gentle, and effective manner.  Homeopathic treatment always strives to bring the body back to harmony and full healthy functioning.

The Homeopath seeks to understand and individualize the way each person is experiencing their illness. In this process she gathers information of the physical, mental, emotional information about the patient in the context of their environment, relationships, habits, heredity, and susceptibility to disease to fully understand the unique expression of the person, their illness, and the disease process. The homeopathic medicine is therefore prescribed on a unique expression of illness in a unique individual. It a sense it is customized medicine.

Homeopathy, therefore is truly holistic and offers the promise of real cure. The highest objective in Homeopathy is to restore health rapidly, gently, and permanently.

History of Homeopathy and How It Works

Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine which is founded on observation, inductive reasoning, and the body’s natural ability to heal. It was founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the 18th century. He was a medical doctor who wanted to find alternative gentle, safe, and effective practices to replace immoral and unethical practices of traditional medicine such as blood letting, purging, and the use of toxic chemicals.

While working as a chemist and translating medical texts, he began to experiment and discovered through observation that the use of Cinchona (Peruvian Bark) produced certain symptoms in a healthy person that were similar to Malaria. Through inquiry and experimentation he confirmed that the same set of symptoms that can be created in a healthy person, can be used to treat a sick person, in a similar disease state; through the administration of a homeopathic medicine. This observation and discovery is based on the Law of similars.  Homeopathy is guided by 4 principles; the Law of Similars, Totality of Symptoms, the use of a single medicine and follows a direction of cure. By following these principles, a homeopath is able to provide a safe and effective method of medicine to allow patients to heal naturally.

The Law of similars refers to the observation and application of the principle of like cures like which indicates that when the symptom picture of a homeopathic medicine when matched with a symptom picture of a patient will result in a curative action. For example drinking coffee can create the symptoms such as; heart palpitations, wakefulness, nervousness, sleeplessness, etc. Therefore a homeopathic version of coffee can be used to treat the same or similar symptoms in a healthy person. In the patient's treatment plan we match the patient’s symptoms to the symptoms produced by the medicine.

The Homeopath gathers the totality of symptoms (physical, mental, emotional) and chooses a single homeopathic medicine that is suitably matched for this pattern. After the patient takes this medicine the homeopath watches for a direction of cure to take place. This usually occurs in a reversal of more recent to older symptoms, the direction from vital organs to less vital organs, from the centre to the circumference (from inside outwards), from above downwards.

Using these principles the homeopath can track the progress of the disease and the health of the patient, and can recognize when treatment is progressing successfully.
